Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, unveiling Keanu Reeves as the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog.

Why it matters: The third installment of the Sonic film series is set to be a major holiday release, with the introduction of Shadow raising the stakes.

The big picture: In the trailer, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) reunites with Tails (by Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (by Idris Elba) to face off against Shadow (by Keanu Reeves), a mysterious new enemy whose powers dwarf anything the team has encountered before.

  • Jim Carrey reprises his role as Dr. Robotnik, adding his signature comedic energy to the villainous role; in addition to his role as Gerald Robotnik, seemingly alive in present day.
  • Alyla Browne was seen for the first time as Maria Robotnik, and Krysten Ritter portrays Director Rockwell.
  • Jeff Fowler returns to direct Sonic 3, ensuring continuity that made the first two films box office successes.
  • Also returning: James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, and James Wolk.
With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.

Bottom line: With high-octane action, a star-studded cast, and the introduction of an iconic character voiced by Reeves, Sonic 3 is positioning itself as a must-see event this winter.

  • It's scheduled for a December 2024 release in domestic markets.
